Returned to Life

OK, its been awhile since I did anything with this blog. Mostly it was because I got frustrated with my job search. At 50 years old it was hard to find anyone that wanted to hire me with the skills I had. Some, the younger punks, thought it was because I was too old and couldn't handle the work. The older ones probably thought I was likely to want to soon go into business for myself and didn't want me poaching their clients.

I also got frustrated with my progress, or lack thereof, in creating my own work. I was getting some small handyman projects, but they never seemed to bring in much money. I'd go out and do a little $50 job. I'd throw a few dollars in the gas tank, and pick up a gallon of milk and/or a loaf of bread, or some other necessity, and I was lucky to come home with a twenty in my pocket.

I was so desperate, I even took another venture into multilevel marketing. But I quickly remembered I'm not a great salesman when it comes to that sort of thing. It requires strict adherence to the 3 foot rule: anyone who comes within 3 feet of you gets a business card and a pitch. More on multilevel marketing later.

We went through an eviction, and nearly a second one. It was an incredibly bleak time. But things have really changed since then. Not only are we paying the bills, but we actually have some discretionary spending. When Microsoft threw Windows XP under the bus and my old computer was no longer safe to use on the internet, I was forced to buy a new one. More on computer shopping later.

Our recovery has been more than just finding more work. Its been finding BETTER work, and saving money. The latter has been accomplished by determining the difference between needs and wants, couponing, and yes, trash picking and dumpster diving. More on all of those subjects later, so stay tuned. I'll have lots of other informative topics as well.

But before I do any more posting, I believe I'll be giving this blog a facelift, and might even change the name. And the FIRST thing I'm going to do is get rid of the footer with the MySpace link. MySpace is sooo last year. (Inside joke.)
