A Few Ways I Earn a Living

So what is it that I have been doing to generate an income?  Well, for years I have worked for a small air conditioning company.  The owner has been semi retired for years.  He made enough money to support himself, but it did not provide me with a living wage.  I got good enough to where the owner allowed me to work under his license, but I was told to "stay under the radar."  I could do work for friends and family, but I couldn't "advertise."  I still don't advertise, but my "circle of friends" has grown.

But still it doesn't provide a living wage, but it's more than it was.  I'll get back to the AC business in a future post.  Big things may be about to happen and I don't want to jinx anything by talking about it publically... yet.

I also use all of my previous experience and work as a handyman, a photographer, a mobile disc jockey, and basically anything for a buck.  But in these trying economic times, now I will do anything for TWO bucks.  I'll be covering some of the other "anything for two buck" ventures in future posts.  But you'll be amazed at the different ways one can earn money.

There are those who say you have to "specialize."  To them I say POPPYCOCK.  Unless you are either VERY good, live in a LARGE market, or have a HUGE customer base, you probably can't make enough money to live on if you specialize.  There was a time when I was making nice money.  I was DJing bars and private parties, doing assembly work for several discount stores in the area, a little bit of photography (enough to buy a few new toys,) and a few odd jobs on the side.  Life was good.  So I decided to take the advice of those who say to "focus."

Then the bottom fell out of the DJ business.  The anti drunk driving campaign hurt the bar business in my area, and kids were coming into the business offering to "play all night for $100."  Granted, that was what I made on my bar gigs, but they were offering to do weddings and private parties at the same low rate.  At that time, I was making over $100 an hour for my basic package.  Some would say: "Just ride it out."  Their thinking was that they would soon fall out of the business and life would again be good.  The problem is that in a situation like that, you can't live AND maintain your equipment AND keep your music library updated if you aren't getting the business.  It was then that the trouble began, so I doubt I will ever "specialize" again.

I also say poppycock to those who say: "Do what you love and the money will come."  I don't have any statistics to back this up, but I think that philosophy fails more than it succeeds.  What if someone LOVES snorting coke and watching porn?  I don't think money will come from that.  In fact, those two loves are losing propositions.  I know that's an extreme example, but it makes the point.  How about something a little less extreme and unhealthy.  Suppose someone likes drinking coffee and watching television?  I'm sure there is SOMEONE out there who gets paid to do just that, but there probably aren't a lot of job openings.

Next time, I'll talk about a few ways to get more work when you are a self employed individual.

Returned to Life

OK, its been awhile since I did anything with this blog. Mostly it was because I got frustrated with my job search. At 50 years old it was hard to find anyone that wanted to hire me with the skills I had. Some, the younger punks, thought it was because I was too old and couldn't handle the work. The older ones probably thought I was likely to want to soon go into business for myself and didn't want me poaching their clients.

I also got frustrated with my progress, or lack thereof, in creating my own work. I was getting some small handyman projects, but they never seemed to bring in much money. I'd go out and do a little $50 job. I'd throw a few dollars in the gas tank, and pick up a gallon of milk and/or a loaf of bread, or some other necessity, and I was lucky to come home with a twenty in my pocket.

I was so desperate, I even took another venture into multilevel marketing. But I quickly remembered I'm not a great salesman when it comes to that sort of thing. It requires strict adherence to the 3 foot rule: anyone who comes within 3 feet of you gets a business card and a pitch. More on multilevel marketing later.

We went through an eviction, and nearly a second one. It was an incredibly bleak time. But things have really changed since then. Not only are we paying the bills, but we actually have some discretionary spending. When Microsoft threw Windows XP under the bus and my old computer was no longer safe to use on the internet, I was forced to buy a new one. More on computer shopping later.

Our recovery has been more than just finding more work. Its been finding BETTER work, and saving money. The latter has been accomplished by determining the difference between needs and wants, couponing, and yes, trash picking and dumpster diving. More on all of those subjects later, so stay tuned. I'll have lots of other informative topics as well.

But before I do any more posting, I believe I'll be giving this blog a facelift, and might even change the name. And the FIRST thing I'm going to do is get rid of the footer with the MySpace link. MySpace is sooo last year. (Inside joke.)

The Job Search and the Job Market in General

I don't know why the economy is so bad. According to these help wanted ads, you can make $300 a day blogging and $270 a day just processing orders for Dish Network. With opportunities like those, we should ALL be rich.

The job search has gotten so discouraging that I even stopped writing about it. We have been getting by on my wife’s disability and whatever meager amount of money I can bring in doing odd jobs. It has gotten so bad that when I hear about a company that is “hiring,” I debate whether or not it’s worth the gasoline to go apply. Note I put the word hiring in quotes. It has been my general finding that they are not, in fact, hiring. They are collecting applications for when they ARE hiring. This is especially prevalent in the air conditioning business. It’s been a long cold winter in Florida, and the AC companies just haven’t been busy. They are, however, looking towards summer. I have been told that this summer I will have no problem getting a job. The problem is, I need one NOW.

If I could just come up with a full time, minimum wage job, we could make ends meet. Just barely, but we could make ends meet. It would be a no frills lifestyle. Now here is the problem. Who is going to hire me for a menial minimum wage job if I tell them the truth about my work history? They know that if I get an offer for an AC job at 2 to 3 times the money, I’ll be gone in a heartbeat. So just how much do I lie? I would like to be able to tell them I just moved here after waking up from a 20 year coma, but that wouldn’t fly. I’ve lived here all my life and sooner or later I would run into someone that knows me. LOL

I have even resorted to looking up “work at home” opportunities. As a past “attempted” Amway distributor, I am leery of all the “opportunities.” I have researched so many such opportunities. Many want huge upfront registration fees, and often, don’t even have a product. The product is the system. Basically, you are supposed to get rich by telling other people how to get rich.

But… I may have found something. A friend of mine told me about a company that she got involved with. It is not multilevel marketing, it doesn’t involve parties, taking orders, stocking and distributing merchandise, or a huge upfront investment. She told me that she started in November and got her first check in December; it was a whopping $10. But fast forward to February and she brought in close to $2000. From $10 to $2000 in 3 months sounds very interesting, especially since she DIDN’T say she did it working 4 to 5 hours a week like so many of the scams out there. My friend told me that she put in almost 40 hours per week, posting to message boards and forums, passing out business cards, and distributing flyers. I’m still doing research but it sounds good so far. More news on this opportunity as it comes in.

Still At It

Still have not had any luck on the job search. I have been sending my resume out in response to at least 2 ads a day on Craigslist. Makes me wonder if it’s that nobody wants me, or if it’s the fact that since Craigslist is free, a lot of the ads are just probing to see who is out there for future reference. I have applied for so many jobs, and custom tailored my resume to each one, I am surprised at how few calls I have even gotten for interviews. Sooner or later something has GOT to come through for me.

As to my previous post about youth sports photography, I didn’t generate any sales, but did accomplish some much needed research. We visited a couple of soccer and football games and took some test shots of each.

Soccer is MUCH easier to photograph than football. Because of the nature of the action, it’s much easier to get more good action shots in soccer. In soccer, the action tends to be one on one. A player on one team has control of the ball and a member of the opposing team stays close in the hopes of taking it away. For the most part, the players are paired off all over the field.

In football, the serious action usually consists of 15 people packed into a 10 square foot area, with the best stuff going on in the middle of that mass of people. I found that more often than not, the quarterback was totally hidden by either those trying to protect him, or those trying to kill him.

I sent out two more resumes/emails last night, and one this morning. Sure hope I hear something soon. Going to spend the day working on some products I want to sell. Like the photography, I don’t expect to get rich, but the way things have been going, if I can get a small income from a number of sources, it will be easier than finding one job that will pay all the bills.

The Rest of My Day

Still no call or email from the from the ac company. But a plan has been formulating in my head. Soccer and football season is about to begin, and fall baseball won’t be far behind. The contracts for team photos have already been awarded, but when my son played baseball, other parents oohed and ahhed over my action photos. Several of my son’s friends’ MySpace and Facebook pages feature my photos. Parents have always been a good market for photos of their kids. I’m going to spend the rest of the day doing research, laying out flyers and price lists, and working on my photography page. I don’t expect to make a fortune, but it could conceivably provide enough income that I will only need a part time job to make ends meet. Wish me luck and stay tuned for more news.
